Japan tid bits

When I book a trip for you, we will sit down and go over where you are visiting, how to get around, how to handle the language barrier, and important things to know when traveling. Here are a few helpful things to know when visiting Japan:

Visa Requirements: You must have a valid passport and an onward/return ticket for tourist/business "visa free" stays of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for the entire time you are staying in Japan.
Language: While many signs are in both Japanese and English, learning a few basic Japanese phrases can be helpful and greatly appreciated by locals.
Currency: Japan uses the Japanese Yen (JPY). Credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas, but it's a good idea to carry cash, especially in rural or remote locations.
Cultural Respect: Japanese culture places great importance on respect. Learn and practice common etiquette, such as bowing, removing shoes before entering homes, and not tipping in restaurants.
Punctuality: Japanese are known for their punctuality. Be on time for appointments and transportation, as lateness is considered impolite.
Chopstick Etiquette: Familiarize yourself with chopstick etiquette. Avoid sticking them vertically in rice, passing food from chopstick to chopstick, or pointing with them.
Footwear: In many traditional Japanese settings, you'll be expected to remove your shoes before entering. Carry socks without holes or go barefoot.
Public Transportation: Japan has an efficient and extensive public transportation system, including trains and buses. Consider purchasing a Japan Rail Pass for cost-effective travel.
Trash Disposal: Japan has strict rules for waste separation and disposal. Familiarize yourself with local guidelines for recycling and disposing of trash.
Bathing Etiquette: When using communal baths or onsen (hot springs), it's customary to wash your body thoroughly before entering the bath.
No Tipping: Tipping is not a common practice in Japan and can even be considered rude. Exceptional service is expected, so tipping is not necessary.
Eating and Drinking: Slurping your noodles is considered a sign of enjoyment in Japan. It's also polite to say "Itadakimasu" before eating and "Gochisousama deshita" after finishing your meal.
Respect for Shrines and Temples: When visiting religious sites, be respectful and follow any posted guidelines, such as removing hats and maintaining a quiet demeanor.
Safety: Japan is generally a safe destination, but it's still wise to be cautious with your belongings and aware of your surroundings.
Emergency Services: The emergency number for police, fire, and medical assistance in Japan is 110.
By adhering to these cultural norms and guidelines, tourists can fully appreciate Japan's rich history, vibrant cities, and breathtaking natural beauty while demonstrating respect for the local culture and traditions.
