Austria tid bits

When I book a trip for you, we will sit down and go over where you are visiting, how to get around, how to handle the language barrier, and important things to know when traveling. Here are a few helping things to know when visiting Austria:

  1. Language: German is the official language in Austria, but English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas. Learning a few basic German phrases can be helpful.

  2. Currency: Austria uses the Euro (EUR). Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's advisable to carry some cash for smaller establishments and transportation.

  3. Cultural Etiquette: Austrian culture places a strong emphasis on politeness and punctuality. Greet with a firm handshake, say "Guten Tag" (Good day) when entering shops, and be on time for appointments.

  4. Public Transportation: Austria has an efficient public transportation system, including trams, buses, and trains. Consider getting a Vienna Card or the ÖBB Vorteilscard for discounts on transportation.

  5. Tipping: Tipping is customary, and service charges are often not included in the bill. It's common to round up or leave a 5-10% tip in restaurants.

  6. Dining: Austrian cuisine is renowned for its pastries, schnitzels, and coffee. Don't miss the chance to try local specialties like Wiener Schnitzel and Sachertorte.

  7. Smoking Regulations: Austria has strict smoking regulations. Smoking is prohibited in enclosed public spaces, including restaurants and cafes.

  8. Shopping Hours: Shops in Austria typically close by 6:30 PM on weekdays and noon on Saturdays. Some may be closed on Sundays and public holidays.

  9. Cultural Events: Austria is famous for its cultural events, including classical music concerts and opera performances. Check the schedules for events like the Vienna Opera Ball or Salzburg Festival.

  10. Museums and Attractions: Many museums and attractions in Austria are closed on Mondays, so plan your visits accordingly.

  11. Outdoor Activities: Austria's stunning alpine landscapes provide numerous opportunities for outdoor activities, including skiing, hiking, and biking. Check the seasons and activities available in the region you plan to visit.

  12. Recycling: Austria is environmentally conscious, and recycling is a standard practice. Separate waste accordingly in provided bins.

  13. Safety: Austria is a safe country for travelers, but standard safety precautions should still be followed.

By keeping these points in mind, you can enjoy Austria's charming cities, breathtaking alpine scenery, and rich cultural heritage while respecting local customs and traditions.
